The book had an enormous impact, and ran into numerous editions. It is probably the most celebrated contemporary account of what it is like to be mad. In it she described the experience of profound regression in London's best-known community household of the 1960s, Kingsley Hall. Her psychotherapist and co-author, Joseph Berke, described the experience in his own way. Mary Barnes slowly 'came up', and began to paint and write. Something Sacred, through a series of interviews, continues the story, nearly 20 years later, and reproduces some of Mary Barnes' work.
